Quality through Experience
More than 3 decades of experience give us a valuable resource to purchase high quality logs from well managed forests that are husbanded sustainably to produce an on-going resource for future generations. This experience extends to cover the methods to handle and convert this quality raw material in the best possible way to boules and lumber.
Three stage quality control
Each piece of hardwood goes through 3 stages of quality control until it is finally assigned to a standard or custom-use assortment.
To achieve a clean and high quality product we follow the following procedures for all the material we process:
- The bark is removed from the logs
- Boards are brushed after sawing to remove excess saw-dust, then are put in stick straight off the saw, and built in to packs which are stacked carefully to ensure all bearers and stickers are in vertical lines, so reducing distortion to a minimum. These stacks then air dry for a suitable period according to specie and thickness.
- Beech is dip treated to prevent mould and infestation. After steaming or stacking to air dry.
- Timber is kilned only when sufficiently well air dried to reduce to a minimum any potential drying defects.
- Kiln dried, boules or lumber are stored in a heated and air conditioned hall to ensure optimum storage.
Most beech is steamed to give an even pinkish red colour with the added advantage of a reduction in the natural wood tension usual with this specie.
A large Assortment of Wood species, and grades
As well as our large well sorted stocks of Oak and Beech we saw Ash, Cherry, Maple and American Cherry, Black Walnut and red Elm.
